Home to an interracial married couple, this maisonette reflects the pair’s unique cultural heritage. The design brief to their designers from Design 4 Space was to retain the existing parquet finishes of their home and to integrate a contemporary style for a fresh update. To fuse both of these contrasting styles seamlessly, the team embellished the home with modern design lines such as the sleek custom-built ceiling fixtures and balcony divider panel.

Swathe in white and woody tones, the colour palette of the living zone echoes the parquet finishes. It imparts a contemporary style whic his equal parts stylish and soothing. To better differentiate the living zone from the balcony, the designers worked in strips of wood-effect panels in laminate finishes, which let in natural light without compromising on privacy.

The wood-effect strips are applied onto the Tv feature wall as well, and this design continuity adds a calming sense of cohesiveness. To further the contemporary theme, the designers conceptualised a TV console and feature wall with streamlined forms and warm wood finished. This modern style complements the rich wood textures that are evident on the door frames and original staircase fittings.

One of the design highlights of the home is the original ceiling parquet strips. The richness of this premium wood meant that tearing the ceiling down would be a real pity. Retaining it was, therefore, a prerequisite and to better match the ceiling, the team chose a chandelier with gorgeous baroque style accents. This lofty chandelier also emphasised the double volume ceiling beautifully.

Stones textures imbue the bathroom with a relaxed atmosphere. The bathtub is encased in stone-like tiles while the sink counter and cabinetry in the dry zone are dressed in stone-look laminates. These distinctive stone textures pair well with the solid colours such as the grey tiles flooring and black wall tiles; and together, the elements create a modern resort-style.
